The proposals that are selected need to meet CCRI’s current priorities and eligibility categories. The grants are typically used as one-time gap funding for capital projects that increase or improve the stock of affordable sober housing in Massachusetts. Other proposals that provide services for residents in MassHousing-financed rental housing, specifically those that address alcohol and/or drug abuse or addiction, are also considered for funding. CCRI grant recipients must be 501c3 non-profit organizations and matching funds must be provided. All proposals and applicant qualifications are stringently reviewed and vetted by MassHousing. Fast forward to 2016 where I now sit, writing this blog in the office of Tharros House, my own High Standards Structured Sober Living home in Lexington Massachusetts. Each recovering individual has one foot in their recovery continuum building a support group for themselves once they leave us, and the other foot in everyday life. Most of our community has been through an inpatient rehab program or halfway house and have learned about the disease of addiction and the tools needed in order to stay sober. All community members are subject to random drug screens and daily breathalyzing. This is a critical part of our routine to ensure accountability. We provide the new comer with built in peer-based support, where help and a sense of fellowship, which is much needed in early recovery, can be found. Many people will live in a sober house for 6 months to a year after treatment concludes. While this isn’t usually a requirement, it can be helpful to people new to recovery.
